Vom 01. – 06. Juli betritt die PWA Worldtour in Turkmenistan neues Terrain. Der Binnenstaat in Zentralasien liegt am kaspischen Meer, Nachbarländer sind Iran, Afghanistan, Usbekistan und Kasachstan. Die Gegend um “Awaza” entwickelt sich im Bezug auf Wirtschaft, Bildung und natürlich Sport super schnell und der nagelneue “Yelken Yacht Club” scheint die perfekte Location für die Austragung eines PWA Events zu sein. Das gilt hoffentlich auch für den Wind denn Awaza ist ein Thermikrevier welches für 25-30 Knoten Wind gut ist und sich angeblich sogar in einen “Starboard Tack Wavespot” verwandeln kann. Heute stand die “Opening Ceremony” auf dem Programm und zum ersten großen internationalen Sportevent im “Yelken Yacht Club” reiste sogar Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, der President von Turkmenistan, an. Der restliche Tag verlief, untypischerweise mit vielen Wolken, Blitz und Donner – was den thermischen Wind von Awaza mehr oder weniger komplett ausbremste. Die Vorhersage für die kommenden Tage sieht aber ganz vielversprechend aus und wir sind schon gespannt, wie die ersten Eliminations verlaufen werden. In einem neuen Format gehen übrigens 12 Fahrer auf einmal ins Rennen – die besten 6 sind eine Runde weiter. Das wird interessant. Skippers Meeting ist morgen um 06:00 Uhr Ortszeit, eine halbe Stunde später kann theoretisch bereits der erste Heat losgehen und sogar Ben Proffitt verkürzte seinen Trainingsaufenthalt in Pozo um einige Tage um als Livestream Kommentator am Start sein zu können. Wer in Deutschland “live dabei” sein möchte muss allerdings früh aufstehen, oder erst garnicht ins Bett gehen, denn Awaza ist der EU 3 Stunden voraus. Wir halten euch auf dem Laufenden! The next day was possibly the best with conditions for 7.9m or 8.6m, but the wind seems to swing a lot here and comes from a variety of directions, so it could easily be port or starboard tack. I think it’s going to be a tough week for both the racers and the crew.” Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde) “Awaza is the first time on the PWA World Tour, so new event, super happy to discover a new place. Travel was not too long as I had 2 flights to arrive in Ashgabat, 3 hours Paris, Istanbul and 3 hours Istanbul to Asgabat with Turkish Airlines and then people from the organisation were waiting for us to direct us on the next flight to Awaza, all bags arrived in good time.Then we arrived in a wonderful and luxury hotel just built, lots of people waiting for us and help us in anything they can. I was already on the water with my training partner Cédric Bordes and Julien Quentel, wind was light but enough to sail all afternoon, climate is just perfect. So yes I won the event in Costa Brava now come the event number two, so I will try to do my best and I feel confident in me and my gear, I think that we will be using again our big equipment, hope we will have a lot of days with wind and we can do lots of slalom racing. I want to thanks Turkmenistan for the invitation to the event, this is the first international sporting event they have organised so this is a very important event they are making and I am sure we will do lots of slalom in the beautiful Yelken hotel and yacht club.”
