Das Warten ist vorbei. Nach fast 20 Jahren, findet wieder ein PWA- Event am Pointe de la Torche, Frankreich statt. Vom 18. bis 26. Oktober werden die besten Wavesurfer, zusammen mit den schnellsten Männern und Frauen der Slalomfleet um Punkte kämpfen. Dieser Event ist der vorletzte der 2014er PWA World Tour. Bislang ist in keiner Disziplin der Weltmeistertitel vergeben, es wird sehr spannend! Wer behält die Nerven und wer knickt unter dem Druck ein?
Einige Fahrer sind schon seit einigen Tagen vor Ort, die Bedingungen sehen bisher sehr gut aus. Besonders die Wellen versprechen radikale Action, auch im Slalom wird es womöglich sehr spektakulär, La Torche ist schließlich für seine radikalen Wellenbedingungen bekannt......

La Point de la Torche is located in the Bigouden region of Finistère, France and now holds legendary status for watersports enthusiasts - largely due to windsurfing. During the 1980s and 90s La Point de la Torche consistently showed the world class conditions that it is now renowned for as greats such as Robby Naish (Naish) and Robert Teriitehau shot to stardom, during the hugely successful world cup events. La Point de la Torche is found at the southern end of the wild Bay of Audierne, which receives its name due to being exposed to the brunt of Atlantic storms, which consistently hit La Point de la Torche’s shores during the European autumn and winter, bringing with it ferocious wind and waves. For most people, this may sound like a nightmare, but for windsurfers and surfers this is the prime reason to visit.
Ones to Watch / Men’s
Wave
On current forecasts La Point de la Torche is set to be firing from day one with the promise of 20-30 knot winds and waves of up to 3.8m at 12 seconds being predicted. With this in mind the decision has been made to reserve the opening day solely for waves - with the action commencing from 11:30am.
As the current PWA Wave World Tour leader - Victor Fernandez (Fanatic / North / MFC) - will be hoping to continue his charge to the title. The Spaniard headed to La Torche early to make sure he is fully prepared for whatever the Atlantic may throw at him. Up until now, Fernandez, has looked in irresistible form both in the air and on the wave and has finished in the top three at every event so far - including victory in Pozo. Expect to see Fernandez continue his fine form as he closes in on his first world title since 2010.
Two-time PWA Wave World Champion - Philip Köster (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) - sits just behind Fernandez for the time being with a victory and two joint fifths, so far in 2014. However, Köster, will be determined to reclaim his world crown and knows that victory here is critical to keep those hopes alive, by closing the gap on Fernandez, who has a substantial lead. The Spaniard is guaranteed to end the event ahead of Köster no matter what, due to the discard coming into play in the fourth event of the year.
Thomas Traversa (Tabou / GA Sails) completes the top three at this stage and is the only man who could potentially topple, Fernandez, from the top of the rankings come the end of the event. The Frenchman has backed up his victory in Denmark with a solid second place in Tenerife and will now be looking to discard his ninth place finish from Pozo. Another victory here for Traversa would guarantee him top spot in the overall rankings with one event to go. Second place could also prove good enough, but only if Fernandez fails to win the event himself. TT comes into his own when the conditions get big and gnarly - proven by the fact that he was crowned the Red Bull Storm Chase Champion - so the current forecast could play into his hands. Expect to see Traversa charging for the lip as he tries to continue his charge for the number one spot.
Reigning world champion - Marcilio ‘Brawzinho’ Browne (Goya Windsurfing / MFC) - will be determined to force his way back into the top three come the end of the nine days ahead, having missed out on the podium at the previous two events. The Brazilian possesses all the armoury in his artillery to do just that and he’ll be calling upon his whole bag of tricks to take down his rivals.
Klaas Voget (Fanatic / Simmer / MFC) will be hoping to continue his fine form this season as he goes in search of his first overall top five finish since 2009, currently fifth. Meanwhile, Britain’s Robby Swift (JP / NeilPryde / Mystic / Maui Ultra Fins), will enter the event full of confidence having earned his maiden podium finish in Denmark.
The discard could see Ricardo Campello (Patrik / Point-7 / MFC) and Jaeger Stone (SSD / Severne) slingshot their way up the rankings, with both sailors currently counting a joint seventeenth place. Campello has shown glimpses of genius this year and will be hoping to reignite his fight for the prestigious podium, with a solid performance here. Stone, meanwhile, will be displaying more of his fluid, radical riding as he attempts to continue his hugely impressive return to the PWA World Tour.
Completing the top ten at this stage are Britain’s John Skye (RRD / RRD / MFC) and Germany’s Leon Jamaer (JP / NeilPryde). Both will be serious threats to anyone in the fleet and you can expect to see them challenging for the top ten and beyond again. As will vice-world champion Alex Mussolini (Tabou / GA Sails), Moritz Mauch (Starboard / Severne / MFC) and many others.
Slalom
Cyril Moussilmani (Starboard / Severne) reassumed control of the title race after the last event in Sylt. The fiery Frenchman has been in unbelievable consistent form so far this year with three, second places and a joint first to his name, and will be doing everything in his power to maintain his lead at the top as he goes in search of a maiden world title. Expect to see more brilliant gybing and daring overtaking manoeuvres as he looks to keep in rivals at arms length.
An untimely, and uncharacteristic mistake, from Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde) in Sylt saw the reigning world champion slip to second place in the overall rankings, but he’ll be back stronger than ever for the penultimate event of 2014. In order to return to the top, Albeau, would need to win the event, whilst requiring, Moussilmani, to finish fifth or worse.
The French are dominating the slalom at the moment and Pierre Mortefon (Fanatic / North) completes an all French the top three for now. The twenty-five year old is enjoying his best season to date on tour, so confidence will be sky high as he looks to maintain his fine form. Meanwhile, fellow compatriot Pascal Toselli (Starboard / Point-7), currently sits fifth and will be hoping to put the records straight after a disappointing showing in Sylt.
Arnon Dagan (RRD / NeilPryde) comes into La Torche fresh off the back of his maiden victory on the PWA Slalom World Tour and he will be in buoyant mood. The Israeli excelled in the rough seas of Sylt, which should stand him in good stead for the next nine days ahead, as La Torche could produce more exhilarating and challenging racing conditions.
For the first time this season Matteo Iachino (Fanatic / North) missed out on a place in the top ten in Sylt, but the Italian will no doubt be back to his best in France. The twenty-four year old is one of the most promising young talents on the tour and he’ll be aiming to maintain his place in the overall top ten at a minimum - currently sixth place.
Julien Quentel (RRD / NeilPryde) looks to have re-found the form which saw him finish third overall in 2013. The man from Saint Martin had been slightly off the pace earlier this year, but back-to-back podiums have seen him rise up the rankings into seventh. Quentel will now be hoping he can continue to show phenomenal board speed as he fights his way back through the fleet.
Josh Angulo (Angulo / Gun Sails) is another man who has been in consistent form this season, with four top ten finishes out of five. Expect to see more perfectly timed starts as Angulo aims for the top ten and beyond.
Teammates Ben Van Der Steen (Tabou / GA Sails / Mystic) and Ross Williams (Tabou / GA Sails / Mystic) currently complete the top ten, ninth and tenth respectively, and both will be firmly in the mix come the end of the event. Other names to look out for are the likes of Bonaire’s Taty Frans (Starboard / MauiSails / Mystic / MFC), France’s Cedric Bordes (Tabou / GA Sails) and American Micah Buzianis (JP / Maui Sails) among others. Also, after announcing his retirement from the PWA at the end of the season, could Björn Dunkerbeck (Starboard / Severne / Chris Benz / Dunkerbeck Eyewear) challenge for the top? If racing takes place in high winds, then it’s a definite possibility…
Women’s / Slalom
Reigning world champion - Delphine Cousin (Starboard / Loft Sails) - has made a near perfect start to her title defence with victory in Turkmenistan, followed by second place in Turkey. The twenty-three year old will need to be on her A-game though to keep the ominous figure of - Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / Mystic / Maui Ultra Fins) - at bay. The Aruban gem made an emphatic return to the slalom scene in Alacati with seven bullets out of nine and she’ll be gunning for the top again.
2012 world champion - Valerie Ghibaudo (Tabou / GA Sails) - currently occupies second place and the French lady will be hoping to use her excellent straight line speed to maintain her place in the overall top three.
However, Ghibaudo, will have her work cut out with - Lena Erdil (Patrik / Loft Sails / Mystic / AL360) - right on her heels. The two girls are currently tied on points, with only Ghibaudo’s better second place keeping her ahead, for now at least. Erdil has looked a constant threat in the opening two events and has been rewarded with two, excellent third places and you can expect to see her displaying more excellent starts combined with fluid gybes as she looks to challenge for top honours again come the end of the event.
Fellow Turk - Fulya Ünlu (Starboard / Severne) - isn’t far behind in fourth and the eighteen year old should be in the mix again.
Meanwhile, fifth place in the women’s is up for grabs with Spain’s Maria Andrés (Fanatic / Gun Sails / Mystic) missing from proceedings. That could well open the door for the likes of Marianne Kaplas (Starboard / Loft Sails) and Japan’s Ayako Suzuki (Tabou / GA Sails / Mystic) and Mio Anayama (Starboard / NeilPryde).
The next nine days are shaping up to be epic with howling winds and powerful waves predicted from the word go. Der Slalomspezialist wechselt zur italienischem Marke 99NOVENOVE.
Schon länger kursierten Gerüchte über einen Wechsel Finians von RRD zu der noch relativ neuen italienischen Brettmarke 99NOVENOVE. Jetzt ist es auch offiziell, Maynard fährt nicht nur die PWA-Tour mit den Boards, er ist auch für den Ausbau der Marktposition im High-Performance-Segment zuständig.
Finian Maynard, der nach einem schlechten Start in die diesjährige Saison entschied, eine Pause vom Worldcup zu machen, startet sein Comeback 2015 mit seinem neuen Boardsponsor. Cesare Cantagalli, Brand Manager von 99NOVENOVE, brauchte für den Ausbau des Slalomsegments der Marke, einen erfahrenen Racer mit technischem Wissen für die Boardentwicklung und zugleich für gute Platzierungen im Worldcup.
Mit 20 Jahren Erfahrung, sowohl in der sportlichen als auch auf der technischen Seite, mehreren Weltrekorden und Weltmeistertiteln ist Finian Maynard bei NoveNove nun für beides zuständig. Wir wünschen ihm viel Erfolg.

Beste Bedingungen am Tag NACH dem PWA Worldcup Tenerife
Der Tag nach Windsurf Events bringt oft Bedingungen welche sich Fahrer und Organisatoren für den Wettkampf nur zu gerne wünschen würden, doch beim diesjährigen PWA Event auf Teneriffa war das anders. Der 13. August war nämlich nicht nur “der Tag danach” – sondern wahrscheinlich auch der Tag mit dem stärksten Wind des ganzen Sommers. Ein Glück dass wenigstens noch einige Fahrer vor Ort waren und die Bedingungen ausnutzen konnten – genau wie “BJ Productions” – der mit der Kamera am Start war und uns mit abartig guter Slow-Motion Action von Antoine Martin, Alex Mussolini oder Philip Köster versorgt.

Der Countdown für das Wave Event in der Bretagne läuft.
Victor Fernandez ist stets so früh wie möglich an Spots der PWA Wave Tour um sich auf die Bedingungen einzufahren und mit etwas mehr Erfahrung in den Wettkampf zu gehen. Vom 18. – 26. Die Chris Benz Lüderitz Weltrekord Chase 2014 hat begonnen - die ersten nationalen Rekorde sind bereits gefallen!
Die harte Arbeit, Hingabe und das viele Training haben sich ausgezahlt! Das Niveau der Fahrer die dieses Jahr an der Veranstaltung teilnehmen ist sehr hoch, wie die bereits gefahrenen Zeiten beweisen.
Der Wind legte am zweiten Tag der Veranstalung zu - bis zu 35 Knoten mit Böen von mehr als 40 Knoten wurden gemessen.
Ein leidenschaftlicher Kampf entfachte zwischen Anders Bringdal, der schwedischen Legende und 2013 Event Gewinner, Patrick Diethelm, dem italienische Rekordhalter und Hans Kreisel, dem jungen und talentierten Niederländer.
Hans Kreisel, führte lange Zeit mit 49.66 Knoten gefolgt von Anders Bringdal mit 49,61 kts bis Patrik Diethelm vier mal mit mehr als 50 Knoten über den Kanal flog und damit auch gleich einen neuen italienischen Rekord mit 51,09 kts erzielte. Der bisherige italienische Rekord lag bei 50,49 kts.
Martin Toth aus Tschechien hat seinen Rekord von gestern gleich bei seinem ersten Lauf heute mit 41.42 kts verbessert (war 39.96) und legte nochmals mit 44.63 Knoten ordentlich drauf.
Franz Grabner aus Österreich, war gestern schon mit 42,09 Kts sehr nahe am nationalen Rekord gab ordentlich Speed und legte die Messlatte für seine Landsleute enorm hoch - hervorragende 47,88 Knoten!
Remo Diethelm der Schweizer Rekordhalter mit 47 Knoten fuhr heute in der Nähe seines Rekordes mit 46,87 Knoten.
Andrea Baldini, Italienischer Speedsurfer überbot seine eigene beste Geschwindigkeit heute mit 42,79 Knoten (war bisher 41.94) ebenso wie der Südafrikaner Hennie Bredenkamp, mit 45,3 Knoten (bisher 42.99).
Jacques van der Hout aus den Niederlanden, gehört auch im Wettbewerb zu den besten und wird Vierter der Rangliste des Tages mit 48,28 Knoten!
Erik Beale, der berühmte britische Windsurfer, startet sein Comeback in Lüderitz! Er war der erste Windsurfer der jemals über 40 Knoten fuhr und ist eine Legende in der Speedsegelwelt. Er kam erst spät in Lüderitz an, hat am heutigen Tag sein Equipment eingestellt und ist bereit auf die windigen Tage im Kanal. Wir sind gespannt!

Wind und Wellen ließen dieses Jahr beim KIA Cold Hawaii PWA Worldcup lange auf sich warten. Erst Last Minute konnte bei fast kompletter Dunkelheit das Ergebnis gesichert werden und Thomas Traversa siegte vor Victor Fernandez und Leon Jamaer / Robby Swift.

Freestyle Moves von Fabian Weber, Andy Lachauer und Tobias Lamprecht
Die vielleicht besten Sessions in diesem Jahr bot der Walchensee am Feiertagswochenende 03/04. Oktober. Perfekte Nebelthermik lockte wirklich viele Surfer in Richtung Urfeld und natürlich waren auch die beiden Münchner Freestyler Andi Lachauer und Fabian Weber am Start.
Mit einer GoPro wurde ein paar Minuten aus dem Wasser gefilmt und ein kleiner Clip geschnipselt. Definitiv ein Naturschauspiel - und richtig gute Moves. Schaut rein - hier gehts zum Video

Die besten Bilder aus 10 Tagen Windsurf Worldcup Sylt
Der 2014 DAVIDOFF Cool Water Sylt PWA Super Grand Slam ist durch – und einmal mehr blieben Wind & Wellen weit unter den Erwartungen von Fahrern und Organisatoren. Sehr schade für so ein großes, 10 Tage langes Event, mit dicken Sponsoren – aber eben nicht zu ändern. Es wurde das Beste rausgeholt und im Freestyle gibt es sowohl einen Eventsieger, als auch neue bzw. alte Weltmeister. Im Slalom feierte Arnon Dagan seinen ersten PWA Eventsieg und wird Sylt sicherlich in guter Erinnerung behalten.

Speed Kini 2014 Update

Kaum beginnt der Herbst, stellen sich auch schon die perfekten Bedingungen zum speeden ein.
Nordostwind und eine absolut perfekte Nebellage sorgten am Freitag, 3.10. und Samstag 4.10 für richtig gute Bedingungen am Walchensee. Das Ranking wurde ordentlich durcheinandergewirbelt. Viele verbesserten sich deutlich und es gibt auch wieder Neueinsteiger die ihre ersten Zeiten an Hang Five gemailt haben.
Aufgrund der starken Popularität des Speed-Kini und der guten Chancen auf gute Windtage im Herbst läuft der Wettbewerb jetzt noch einen Monat länger - bis zum 30. November. Jeder Teilnehmer hat damit noch länger die Möglichkeit, schnelle Zeiten zu fahren. Favorit für Spitzenplätze ist natürlich der Kochelsee bei Föhn. Jetzt kommt auch wieder die Zeit der Föhnlagen, also regelmäßig das Wetter und natürlich die Webcam im Auge behalten!
Während bislang viele dachten, dass der Walchensee nicht das Potenzial für Topplatzierungen hat, zeigte am Freitag Claudio Fackelmann, dass sich viele geirrt haben. Mit seinem 8,5er Avanti Machine M1 und einem 114er RRD X-Fire V5 gab er richtig Gas und fuhr einen V-Max von 34,07 und mit unglaublichen 32,81 Knoten über die 500m Distanz. Das bedeutet Rang 2 in der gegenwärtigen Rangliste!
Wer selbst im Nebel auf dem Walchensee unterwegs war, kann sich ungefähr vorstellen was das für ein Ritt war. Allen anderen sei gesagt, dass Claudio bei Topspeed knapp 18m pro Sekunde fuhr und das bei Sichtweiten von rund 150 Metern.
Nachdem sicher einige mit ihren derzeitigen Platzierungen noch nicht zufrieden sind, können wir uns auf einen „speedigen“ Herbst freuen! Der bislang Zweitplatzierte, Markus Purwitzer, der ebenfalls am Freitag sehr schnell war (Vmax 33,80 und 31.47 auf 500m) wird sicher wieder angreifen. Auch der Führende, Andy Laufer wird, nachdem es an der Spitze enger wird, den Herbst kaum auf der Couch verbringen. Möglicherweise bekommt auch der Titelverteidiger Tobi Ulrich, der verletzungsbedingt bislang nicht fahren konnte, noch die Chance seinen Platz im Ranking zu verbessern.

Der Mega Roadtrip von Steven van Broeckhoven quer durch Europa geht weiter
Hier kommt der zweite Teil von “Secrets of the Wind” – dem Mega Roadtrip von Steven van Broeckhoven und Andraz Zan, der als Kameramann am Start war. Es ging Richtung Süden, durch Deutschland, Italien, Spanien bis nach Portugal und überall erwischte der JP / NeilPryde Freestyler einige windige Sessions – gemeinsam mit einigen Locals, und vor unseren Webcams!. Am Ammersee wartete Andy Lachauer, am “Lago” ging es mit Michi Rossmeier in Malcesine aufs Wasser und im Norden Sardiniens traf sich Steven mit Gabriele “Varrux” Varrucciu und Jacopo Testa.

Eventergebnisse und neue Weltmeister auf Sylt
Der finale Tag des DAVIDOFF Cool Water Sylt PWA Super Grand Slams brachte, wie erwartet und vorhergesagt, keine Veränderungen im Ranking mit sich. Teils war das Wasser am Brandenburger Strand – vom Swell mal abgesehen – spiegelglatt. Jose “Gollito” Estredo gewinnt somit den Freestyle Contest und fährt seinen 6. Freestyle Weltmeistertitel ein während Arnon Dagan seinen ersten Sieg im Slalom auf der Worldtour feiert. Wir sagen herzlichen Glückwunsch!
Im Freestyle Overall Ranking sicherte sich Steven van Broeckhoven den Vize-Weltmeistertitel während sich Kiri Thode – Weltmeister des letzten Jahres – mit Rang 3 begnügen muss. Er wird im nächsten Jahr wieder voll angreifen und ein gehöriges Wörtchen im Titelkampf mitreden. Amado Vrieswijk sichert sich Rang 4 in der Jahreswertung vor Dieter van der Eyken – der als zweiter Europäer den Sprung in die Top 5 schafft.
Im Slalom ist noch alles offen – doch natürlich wurde das Overall Ranking etwas durcheinander gewürfelt da nur eine Elimination auf Sylt gefahren werden konnte. Cyril Moussilmani liegt somit in der Gesamtwertung, Dank Rang 2 auf Sylt, wieder vor Antoine Albeau.
Während es für die Freestyler schon in die Winterpause geht treffen sich die Slalom Fahrer und Waver ab dem 18 Oktober in La Torche. Wir sind auch dann wieder dabei.

The final day of the 2014 DAVIDOFF Cool Water Sylt PWA Super Grand Slam saw the light winds return, meaning the final action of the event was another SUP Race. With no more competition being possible today – Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic / North / MFC) – was crowned the PWA Freestyle World Champion for the sixth time in his illustrious career, after his victory in the single elimination yesterday. Meanwhile, Arnon Dagan (RRD / NeilPryde), celebrated his maiden victory on the PWA Slalom World Tour after a nail biting week of waiting.
At 3:30pm the official prize giving was held as the winners were crowned in front of a packed out beach to close the curtain on another great event in Sylt. After the prize giving we caught up with the winners:
PWA: Gollito, how does it feel to win your sixth world title?
Gollito: “It’s a dream to win my sixth world title. It feels amazing, I never expected it in my life. I’m really happy to have won again and be back at the top. I hope I can continue like this in the future and I will keep training as hard as I can over the winter to make sure I can keep up.”
PWA: You came into the final event of the year in third place, did you think you’d be able to come out as the world champion?
Gollito: “I never expected it to be honest. I just came to compete and try to get a good result in the final event of the year. To leave as the world champion is unbelievable. I feel lucky, but this is competition sailing. Last year I sailed really good, but I had a bad finish to the year, this year it worked out differently.”
Next up we spoke to Arnon Dagan, who claimed victory for the first time in his career:
PWA: What was going through your head yesterday when you went over the start line early during the semifinal?
AD: “The first thing that went through my head was that’s it! if I didn’t win this then I would never win one. The second thing was okay… I’m going to go to the beach now. The third thing was oh my god I still have to sail the losers’ final.”
PWA: How does it feel to earn your first event victory?
AD: “It feels amazing. It feels like all the hard work paid off. It doesn’t feel real yet because it was only one round. After this I feel like I have good momentum now after Turkey and here and hopefully I can continue like this. Anything can happen now.”
PWA: What are you doing before the next event? And in-between La Torche and New Caledonia?
AD: “I’m pretty busy, first of all I’ll be going to RRD for a meeting and after that I’ll go a train in Croatia with Enrico Marotti. After La Torche I’ll be going to Maui for some sail testing with NeilPryde.”
PWA: Thanks Arnon and congratulations.
Finally, we spoke to freestyle queen – Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / Mystic / Maui Ultra Fins) – who was officially crowned PWA Freestyle World Champion for an incredible seventh time, she said: “Yeaaah! Lucky number seven. I am actually really happy about it, especially because this year I had time to train and I feel like a progressed, in competition as well. When the called out my name earlier on stage, I felt a bit emotional. When I think about it, seven world titles is actually a lot, so… I don’t know… I’m thankful, it’s really good. I’m also happy to see Oda (Johanne) and Maaike (Huvermann) pushing because that also keeps pushing me to improve. I can’t wait.”
After the prize giving the sailors prepared to depart Sylt for another year and the slalom fleets and men’s wave sailors will meet again from the 18th October as they head to La Torche, France.

Endlich Wind - eine komplette Freestyle Elimination sowie einige Slaloms konnten gefahren werden
Die Bedingungen sahen zu Beginn des 9. Wettkampftags alles andere als vielversprechend aus – doch nach ein paar Stunden kam der vorhergesagte Wind durch und der vorletzte Tag des DAVIDOFF Cool Water PWA Super Grand Slams wurde zu einer actiongeladenen Veranstaltung. Los ging es mit Freestyle wo eine komplette Single Elimination durchgezogen werden konnte – wenn auch aufgrund der Windrichtung “nur” sehr weit draußen. Jose “Gollito” Estredo war in überragender Form und holte sich die Krone als er gegen einen überraschend im Finale auftauchenden Anthony Ruenes die Oberhand behielt. Im kleinen Finale setzte sich Steven van Broeckhoven gegen Tonky Frans durch. Kiri Thode verliert mit Rang 5 in der Single im Titelrennen an Boden.
Pech für Adrian Beholz, der zwar nach wie vor in den Top 10 liegt, aber trotz 45,5 Punkten von Tonky Frans aus dem Rennen geworfen wurde. Alle 3 weiteren Deutschen Fahrer (Marco Lufen, Tilo Eber und Valentin Böckler) verloren leider ihre ersten Heats und hofften auf die Double Elimination – welche leider nach wenigen Heats aufgrund des nachlasenden Windes abgebrochen werden musste. Ein Disziplinenwechsel stand an.
Schnell wurden die Slalombojen gesetzt und Elimination 2 gestartet. Hier konnten “nur” 6 Runden gefahren werden und somit ist hier noch keine Wertung erreicht. Arnon Dagan, der Eventführende, kegelte sich mit einem Frühstart selbst aus dem Rennen und wird hoffen, dass der Wind am letzten Wettkampftag keine weiteren Wettfahren mehr zulässt – denn so könnte er trotz seines Fehlers seinen ersten PWA Sieg einfahren. Conditions didn’t look too promising first thing this morning, but thankfully after a few hours of waiting the forecasted wind filtered through allowing the completion of the men’s freestyle single elimination on the penultimate day of the DAVIDOFF Cool Water Sylt PWA Super Grand Slam. Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic / North / MFC) was in outstanding form as he claimed victory to move to the top of the PWA Freestyle World Tour rankings, and the Venezuelan is now on the verge of being crowned freestyle champion for an incredible sixth time, after reigning world champion – Kiri Thode (Starboard / GA Sails) – finished outside of the top four.
Freestyle – Single Elimination
History repeated itself today as Anthony Ruenes (Tabou / GA Sails) proved to be the thorn in Kiri Thode’s back, just as in 2007 when he also derailed the Bonairean’s title challenge. Ruenes was in fantastic form, but unfortunately for Thode, many of his best moves were completed after he had already filled his scoresheet. This opened the door for either Steven Van Broeckhoven (JP / NeilPryde) or Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo to assume control at the top as they met each other in a blockbuster semifinal – which could decide the 2014 PWA Freestyle World Champion.
Ultimately, it was Gollito who managed to take advantage of the opportunity presented before him as he defeated Van Broeckhoven in the semifinals with a stunning performance, to set up a battle with Anthony Ruenes in the winners’ final.
Winners’ Final
Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo continued his inspired form in the final as he took a giant step towards his sixth world title. The Venezuelan was particularly outstanding on port tack as he dominated with big, powerful air moves – starting with a monster shaka before adding a trademark pasko and a double culo. His opponent – Anthony Ruenes – made a strong start to the final as he stomped an air funnel into funnel, before going slightly off the boil in the middle of the heat. However, the Frenchman, soon re-found his form to fight back by landing a stylish shuvit spock and an amazing no-handed air flaka. Unfortunately, for Ruenes, Gollito was just too good on this occasion as he claimed the single elimination victory. Ruenes still enjoyed a fantastic day though, as today was the first time he has been able to break back into the top three and beyond in almost ten years – since his return to the world tour after completing his studies.
Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo on the verge of world title number six: “I wasn’t thinking about the title race when I was sailing – to be honest I was just focusing on sailing my best and hoping that that would be enough! Today and yesterday have been amazing. I was happy to win the tow-in and I’m even happier to win the single elimination. The conditions were good and I was fully powered to overpowered on my 5.2m.”
Earlier in the single elimination – Anthony Ruenes – was involved in an almost inseparable heat versus Thomas Traversa (Tabou / GA Sails). The two countryman finished the heat tied on both technical skill and diversity, so the decision came down to the best non-counting move, which saw Ruenes advance with a burner as his backup trick.
Elsewhere, Björn Saragoza (Starboard / Hot Sails Maui) defeated fellow Bonairean Taty Frans (Starboard / MauiSails / Mystic / MFC) in heat eighteen. Frans sailed a good heat, but unfortunately for him two of his best moves were judged as being outside the competition area, and therefore didn’t count, whilst his backloop was landed moments after the buzzer.
Adrian Beholz (Fanatic / Sailloft Hamburg / Maui Ultra Fins) was also unlucky in heat nineteen as he crashed out against an on form Tonky Frans (Tabou / GA Sails) – who finished fourth. The German accumulated one of the highest scores of the day, up to that point so far with 45.5 points, which would have been enough to defeat either Adrien Bosson (Fanatic / North) or Dieter Van der Eyken (Starboard / Severne) on the opposite side of the heat.
The opening two rounds of the double elimination were completed before the conditions became too inconsistent, which led to the competition being abandoned shortly after 4pm. Up until this point the top seeds had successfully navigated their way through to the next rounds.
Slalom – Elimination Two
Shortly after the freestyle double elimination was abandoned, the second elimination resumed. However, the conditions soon deteriorated further and only another six heats were completed before the racing was also abandoned, which could prove to be a blessing in disguise for event leader – Arnon Dagan (RRD / NeilPryde) – who was disqualified from the second semifinal after a premature start. This means that no result will stand until the winners’ final has been completed, so he could still escape as the champion, after his untimely error.
The forecast for tomorrow doesn’t look particularly promising with light winds expected throughout the day. However, just in case the forecast proves to be wrong the slalom fleet will meet at 9:30am with the first possible start at 10am. Meanwhile, the freestyle and wave heats will meet at 10am and 11am with the action beginning at 10:30am and 11:30am, respectively. If the wind proves too light for official contest then there will be more action on the water with another freestyle tow-in session from 11:30am until 1pm, followed by a wind SUP race at 2pm until 3:15pm. Die letzten 2 Eventtage stehen an und seit 6 Tagen warten die Fahrer auf Wind
Am 8. Wettkampftag des DAVIDOFF Cool Water Sylt PWA Super Grand Slams ging es leider mit sehr leichtem Wind weiter. Wir hatten über das Wartespiel bereits berichtet und um wenigstens ein bisschen Action für die Zuschauer bieten zu können gab es neben einem WindSUP Race auch noch eine Tow-In Night Sessions – wobei letzteres natürlich spektakulärer war als der SUP Wettkampf, welchen Sarah-Quita Offringa, Antoine Albert, Taty Frans und Nicolas Akgazciyan für sich entscheiden konnten
Neben 5 gesetzten Fahrern konnten sich die letzten Tage noch 5 weitere Rider für die Philips Winch Tow-in Freestyle Night Session qualifizieren und somit am großen Finale gestern teilnehmen und mit 2 Versuchen das Publikum und vor allem die Judges beeindrucken. Nach der ersten Runde führte Tonky Frans mit einem perfekten Burner doch mit dem letzten Versuch gingen einige Fahrer nochmal volles Risiko. Zuerst zeigte Ricardo Campello einen unglaublichen Pushloop während Gollito Estredo mit einem Burner 360 dagegen hielt. Dieser Move war den Judges scheinbar mehr wert und so siegte der Freestyler mit einem Punkt Vorsprung vor dem Waver – viele Zuschauer waren anderer Meinung. Tonky Frans auf Rang 3.
Nach 6 Tagen ohne Wind sieht die Vorhersage für heute vielversprechender aus. Alle hoffen auf Freestyle und Slalom – für Wave ist der Wind wohl zu auflandig und/oder die Wellen zu klein. Ab in den Livestream und keine Action verpassen!
